About The Project
A picture is worth a thousand words ...
Imagine you want to share the experience of your property with someone. Now imagine that you had to make a choice between using 1,000 words or using just one photograph.
Which option would you choose?
If you chose the photograph, imagine what that picture might look like. Would it be wide open and spacious or small and cluttered? Brightly lit or dark and mysterious? What time of day would the photograph have been taken?
Chances are right now someone in the Canberra-region is sharing their property with someone. Chances are almost as good that the person the property is being shared with is forming an impression about the property based on one medium photograph and a handful of smaller ones. This is the default listing display for all of the major real estate web sites including allhomes, Domain and realestate.com.au
Property photography matters (and not just for real estate).
Project 52 AU is the project of Evan Walters, The Learner Property Photographer. Now Evan loves photography, in fact he's always loved photography. He's taken the occasional good photograph, but he's never really nailed a style of photography. Project 52 AU is a public personal challenge he has set himself. Evan wants to learn how to take world-class property photos that showcase a properties full potential.
Starting from September 1, 2009, Evan aims to photograph 52 Canberra-region properties in 52 weeks. Starting with a head full of knowledge and a little experience from photographing his own home, he is committed to learning property photography through photographing a diverse range of properties with different space and lighting situations.
To complete this project he needs your help. Evan needs properties, lots of them. All that's required, if you are willing to help is your time and access to your property for one hour. You have the choice of either a free photography package or a professional photography package, based on your needs and interest level. Evan Walters loves good photography in all its varied forms. That's probably not surprising considering he purchased his first camera for a school camp at the tender age of ten years old... that's now some twenty years ago! Evan is also passionate about property of all types, having lived in some great (and not so great) properties himself.
Day to day, Evan makes ends meet as a computer geek. His degree in Multimedia introduced him to the world of Adobe® Photoshop® and image editing. Not finding a passion for graphic design he has also tried his hand at teaching Adobe Flash at a private college in Sydney. However his bread and butter lies in Lotus Notes, as an administrator and developer, leading him away from his passion for photography, property, and multimedia. Rather than loose his passion and skill in these areas, Evan created Project 52 AU in June of 2009.
As a property owner himself he understands that whether you are selling or renting your property, you want to ensure the best representation possible. Perhaps nowhere does the phrase, "a picture is worth a thousand words" ring truer. Taking a photo requires only a camera, and someone to point and shoot it. As a property photographer he understands that your home deserves more than a quick 'point and shoot'. Whilst nothing trumps price as the greatest determining factor in how easily (and for how much) your property will sell or rent, capturing a true image of your property requires both the knowledge and skill to truely do your property justice.
Mostly though he likes seeing people smile. He loves that property photography makes people feel great about where they live, regardless of they are selling their old home, buying a new home, or looking to find the perfect tenant or rental.

My first ever twilight shot!
Here it is. My first ever twilight shoot!
I think there's a possibility that there is too much sky in the shot, but otherwise I'm pretty happy with this shot. It's dark enough to show the "glow" that we all love at dusk, and light enough to still showcase the homes features.
And before you ask, no the car and the weeather station aren't included :)
My first photo shoot - now edited
After all the confusion earlier this week regarding what software to use when (and just as importantly why), I think I've got my head around it, so I've uploaded some edited photos for some comments (please leave me your comments).
This photo did not even make the cut in my unedited selection, and yet I think this is now my favourite shot and shows the most promise of all (not that its perfect, there's still much room for improvement). I guess it goes to show you can't judge a photo by how it looks in the camera.
Big Picture Thoughts on Where...

The schoolyard's up and the shopping mall's down.
The stray dogs go to the animal pound,

Sailor: New York, New York!
Bart: New York is that-a-way, man!
Sailor: Thanks, kid!
Both: [singing] It's a hell of a...toooown!
Substitute Springfield for Canberra, and New York for Sydney or Melbourne, and I think this song captures the emotion I feel when I think of the small town that I live in (chuck in all the enthusiasm and youthfulness of these two for good measure). I just don't understand why the rest of the country just doesn't get it. Anyway, I'm off topic!

One thought keeps whizzing around, and around, and around, and around inside my brain regarding 'where' so I'll share it with you.
When I was lucky enough to last visit the south coast, I was shocked by the overall level of property photos I could look at in order to find a place that I actually wanted to stay in (thankfully a friend recommended a place that was just divine). But it got me thinking, in fact, perhaps it was the catalyst that got me to where I am today.
How do people find your holiday home on the coast?
Word of mouth, real estate agents, print brochures, the internet.
That's right! Potentially, TERRIBLE photos are being in conjunction with your real estate INVESTMENT. If every care and attention to detail hasn't been taken to maximise the appearance of your holiday rental (south coast or otherwise) how many people are turning away as a result?
Now I have to admit the south coast is a little out of my way. But I thought I'd put it out there. Generally I don't think the real estate photos of Canberra are too bad, but when it comes to south coast holiday homes its a different story. If you think I could help, please give me a call, or drop me an email, let's get in touch and discuss it.

I can see a problem with what I just said. "Unless completed earlier". How will I know when the challenge has been completed? Is it after 52 homes or 52 weeks? I think I'll worry about this when the time comes.
"Once you have mastered time, you will understand how true it is that most people overestimate what they can accomplish in a year - and underestimate what they can achieve in a decade!" - Anthony Robbins.
